MSU/MAES Farm and Facility Hunting Regulations
This page includes regulations and rules for hunting on land owned by MSU, the College of Agriculture or the Montana Agriculture Experiment Station. This is not an exhaustive list.
Please note that MSU will only respond to hunting requests during normal business hours, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Same-day requests will not be approved.
Information for Hunting at MSU Farms and Facilities

These are no-hunting zones at all times.
Requires express permission via the Red Bluff Hunting Phone Line and is walk-in only. Overnight camping and fires are not allowed. Contact the Red Bluff/Fort Ellis Hunting Line for reservation requests at (406) 994-HUNT (4868). Please have all party members’ names and vehicle description (color, make and model) available.
Reservations are accepted on a first come, first serve basis a minimum of 3 business days in advance. Hunting parties may include no more than 4 members and are limited to 3 consecutive days per reservation, with 1 week between reservations. Hunting parties must park in designated areas: the cemetery, the shop and the Owens Corrals. Parking at the gate to Cottonwood is no longer allowed due to extreme vandalism.
- Archery: Hunting is limited to 1 party per day on the North side of Highway 84 ONLY. The South side of the Highway is CLOSED for Archery season.
- General Season: Hunting is limited to 1 party per day on the North side of Highway 84 and 1 party per day on the South side of Highway 84.
Hunters with reservations who encounter additional hunters are encouraged report unauthorized hunting to FWP at 1-800-TIP-MONT or by calling, texting or emailing:

Fort Ellis is a Fish, Wildlife and Parks weapons-restricted area and requires permission slips from the College of Agriculture. Contact the Red Bluff/Fort Ellis Hunting Line for reservation requests at (406) 994-HUNT (4868). Please have all party members’ names and vehicle description (color, make and model) available.
Hunters with permission slips are allowed four days of hunting per slip and the property is limited to no more than four hunters per day. Information about FWP restrictions can be found at fwp.mt.gov/hunt/regulations.
The Lutz Farm is a weapons-restricted area allowing four hunters per day. The property is only open for hunting on Saturday for Upland Bird Youth Hunting. Pheasants Forever manages online registration and hunting permissions for Lutz Farm, and more information can be found at gallatinvalleypf.org/events.
Lutz farm includes a rented residence and surrounding property, which are a designated no-hunting zone. All visitors and hunters must respect signage and regulations to ensure the safety of visitors and residents or their reservation and permissions will be revoked.
